Washington County says all trash collected in the county goes to the Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy Center at 100 Red Rock Road, Newport, MN 55055. According to the county's recycling and waste page, the plant pulls out metal for recycling and turns the rest into a fuel that Xcel uses to make electricity.
Construction and demolition debris often takes a different path. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency lists four recovery facilities in Minnesota that sort mixed building debris, and it says they commonly recover 50 to 75% of the material by weight.
