What Changes the Price in Austin, TX

A few factors decide what an Austin dumpster rental will cost you.

The first is size. A larger container costs more, yet the right size keeps you from paying for a second haul.

The second is weight. Limestone, concrete, and tile are common on Austin job sites, and they add up fast on the scale. Old roofing and plaster are heavy too, so tell us about them when you book.

The third is the landfill. The City of Austin doesn't run its own landfill, so loads go to state-permitted landfills in Travis County. Each one sets its own disposal fees, usually by the ton.

The fourth is placement. A container in your driveway needs no City permit. One that blocks a sidewalk, parking lane, or traffic lane needs a Temporary Use of Right-of-Way permit, which starts at $475 plus daily usage fees.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need in Austin, TX?

Think about the volume of debris and how heavy it is. Prime Dumpster offers five sizes, from 10 to 40 yards.

The 10-Yard Dumpster is our smallest. It's built for heavy material like concrete, stone, and brick from a patio or retaining wall, since those loads hit the weight cap before they fill the space. It's also enough for a bathroom remodel or small cleanout.

The 15-Yard Dumpster covers a kitchen remodel, a garage cleanout, or removing flooring across a few rooms. You get more space without paying for a large container.

The 20-Yard Dumpster is one of our most requested sizes in Austin. It fits whole-home cleanouts, move-outs, and roof replacements on many homes.

The 30-Yard Dumpster is sized for major remodels, additions, and new home builds. It holds a large amount of mixed construction debris.

The 40-Yard Dumpster is our largest container. It's suited to commercial construction, full teardowns, and big cleanouts at offices or warehouses.

Share the details of your project with your account manager, and they'll help you settle on a size.

Do I Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Austin, TX?

A dumpster on private property, like your driveway or a job site lot, generally doesn't need a City permit in Austin. If the container uses any part of the public right-of-way, you'll need one.

The City's Right-of-Way Management division issues the Temporary Use of Right-of-Way permit, known as a TURP. It covers work that closes or barricades part of a sidewalk, parking lane, or street. A new TURP costs $475, plus usage fees based on the space and the number of days.

For containers at the curb, the City reviews each request on its own. You'll usually need to reserve two parking spaces and place Type III barricades on both sides. The City also asks you to notify Austin 3-1-1 at least three business days before a right-of-way closure.

For questions, call Right-of-Way Management at 512-974-7828. Your account manager can help you work out whether your spot needs a permit and who to talk to.

What Can You Not Put in a Dumpster in Austin, TX?

Most construction and cleanout debris can go in the container. The limits come from Texas rules and the landfill that receives the load.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality keeps certain items out of every municipal landfill. The list includes car batteries, used motor oil and oil filters, whole tires, liquid waste, and regulated hazardous waste. Appliances with refrigerant, like freezers and window units, need it handled before disposal.

Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster. For household items, Austin and Travis County residents can use the City's Recycle and Reuse Center for free. It takes electronics, appliances, scrap metal, and household hazardous waste. Tires cost $6 each there.

Not sure about an item? Ask your account manager before it goes in.

What Can I Throw in a Dumpster Rental?

Household Debris Approved for Dumpster Rentals

Construction and Heavy Debris Accepted for Dumpster Rentals

If the item you want to dispose of isn’t on this list, give us a call for more guidance or check out our guide of what you can throw in a dumpster.

*Approved items may vary by location. Always check your local laws and regulations to avoid any fines or additional fees.

Where Your Waste Goes

Austin doesn't operate a City landfill, so roll-off loads go to state-permitted landfills in Travis County. The state's active landfill list shows three in the county.

For South Austin jobs, the closest options include a construction and demolition landfill at 9600 FM 812 in southeast Travis County, and a full-service landfill at 3606 FM 1327 near Creedmoor. Under its state permit, the FM 812 site takes only brush, construction and demolition debris, and other waste that won't rot, so it can't accept household garbage.

Each landfill sets its own hours and fees. Your account manager will confirm where your load is going and walk you through the disposal fees before delivery.

How Fast Can You Get a Dumpster in Austin, TX?

Most Austin rentals can be scheduled within one to two business days, with delivery landing in a 24 to 48 hour window. Booking several days ahead gives you time to sort out a TURP if the container can't fit on your property.

Tips for an easy delivery:

  • List your debris. Stone, roofing, and furniture weigh very differently, so the details sharpen your quote.
  • Call in the morning. Next-day openings go quickly in a busy building market.
  • Check your approach. Watch for low oak branches, wires, and parked cars along the path the truck will take.
  • Get the permit early. If the container will use the street or sidewalk, apply for your TURP and notify 3-1-1 before you set a date.
  • Schedule pickup promptly. Let your account manager know when you're done so the container leaves fast.

Austin also requires every company that hauls waste in the city to hold a City private waste hauler license. Your account manager can confirm how that rule applies to your job before you book.

Austin, TX Dumpster Questions

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Austin, TX?

Austin dumpster rentals range from $399 to $499 for a 10-yard container to $699 to $899 for a 40-yard container, for a five-day rental. The weight of your debris and the landfill's disposal fees also affect the total. Your account manager confirms your included tonnage and overage rate before delivery.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or go to the dump?

For a big project, a dumpster usually wins. Driving debris to a landfill outside the city means a disposal fee on every trip, plus fuel, a truck, and hours of your day. A dumpster sits on your site the whole time and leaves in one haul.

Will a couch fit in a 10-yard dumpster?

Yes. A standard three-seat couch uses about a fifth of a 10-yard dumpster. There's still room for a mattress frame, a desk, and lots of bags. Furniture fills space long before it gets close to the weight limit.

When renting a dumpster, what can you not put in it?

Keep out hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos. Texas also bars car batteries, used motor oil, oil filters, and whole tires from landfills. Appliances need their refrigerant handled first. Austin residents can take many of these items to the City's Recycle and Reuse Center.

What is the cheapest dumpster I can rent in Austin, TX?

The 10-yard dumpster is our lowest-priced size, at $399 to $499. It's ideal for small or heavy jobs, but limestone and concrete can push it over the weight limit. Keeping dense material in its own load is the best way to avoid overage charges.

How much is it to rent a dumpster for 3 days?

Three days usually costs the same as five, because pricing is set by the job rather than by the day. The weight of your debris affects your bill more than the rental length. If the container is on the street, remember that TURP usage fees are charged per day.

What can you legally put in a dumpster?

Most household and building debris is allowed, including lumber, drywall, roofing, flooring, cabinets, furniture, brush, and cardboard. Clean concrete, stone, and brick are accepted too and can cost less in a separate load. Ask your account manager about any item you're unsure of before loading it.
