Most construction and household debris is fine. The limits come from Illinois landfill bans and from each landfill's own rules.
The Illinois EPA keeps several items out of landfills. Leaves, grass, and brush have been banned since 1990, along with car batteries. Used tires and large appliances that still hold Freon, mercury switches, or PCBs were banned in 1994, and motor oil in 1996. State law also bars many electronics, including TVs and computers.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.
The City's curbside service won't take TVs, computer monitors, hard drives, tires, or construction debris. A tire recycler in town accepts tires, so set them aside and mention them when you book.
If you're unsure about an item, ask your account manager before it goes in.
