Most remodeling and cleanout debris is fine. Illinois landfill bans and the receiving sites set the limits.
Illinois has banned several items from landfills for decades. The Illinois EPA lists the bans and their dates. Yard waste has been banned since 1990, along with lead-acid car batteries. Used tires and large appliances that still hold Freon, mercury switches, or PCBs were banned in 1994, and motor oil followed in 1996.
Electronics are banned too. According to the Illinois EPA, state law keeps TVs and computers out of landfills, so they belong with an electronics recycler.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either. Take old batteries back to a retailer, and have appliances stripped of refrigerant or hauled to a scrap yard.
