Ordinary remodel and cleanout debris is welcome. The hard limits come from Illinois, which has kept a list of materials out of landfills for decades.
The state's banned list is long and it's enforced at the scale. Yard and landscape waste, used tires, motor oil, and lead-acid vehicle batteries are all barred from landfill disposal. Televisions, monitors, and computers are prohibited as well, so an old set in the basement has to be pulled out of the load.
Large appliances have a two-part rule. A fridge, freezer, range, water heater, air conditioner, or humidifier may not be landfilled until its mercury switches, refrigerant gas, and similar components have been taken out. The village adds its own step and asks that refrigerator doors come off before anything is discarded.
Everything genuinely hazardous stays out: paint, solvents, fuel, pool chemicals, pressurized cylinders, and asbestos.
When an item doesn't clearly belong in any bucket, ask your account manager first and save yourself a rejected load.
