Most construction and household debris is fine to load. The limits come from Illinois landfill bans and from what the receiving facility will take.
Illinois has banned several everyday materials outright. Landscape waste and lead-acid vehicle batteries have been kept out of landfills since 1990, liquid used motor oil since 1996, and large appliances since 1994 unless their refrigerant and regulated switches are removed first by someone qualified to do it.
Electronics are barred from Illinois landfills as well, so televisions, monitors, computers, printers, and game consoles have to be recycled. The regional drop-off takes a limited number of items per household and accepts nothing from businesses, schools, or institutions.
Anything hazardous stays out of a roll-off: paint, solvents, fuel, pesticides, chemicals, mercury-containing items, and asbestos. Liquids of any kind are refused as well.
Compact fluorescent bulbs have a local home. The Skokie Health Department takes them back on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be reached at 847-933-8252. For anything you're unsure about, ask your account manager before it goes in the container.
