Most household and construction debris can go in a roll-off container. Illinois law sets the main limits.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency lists several items banned from landfills. Used tires, lead-acid car batteries, and motor oil are all banned. So are appliances like refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, and air conditioners unless their mercury switches, Freon, and PCB parts have been removed. Landscape waste, such as grass, leaves, and branches, can't go to a landfill either.
Illinois also makes it illegal to throw away TVs, computers, monitors, printers, and many other electronics. Village residents can set out two electronic items a week for free recycling with a scheduled pickup.
Hazardous waste, paint, solvents, fuel, liquids, propane tanks, and asbestos stay out of any standard dumpster.
