In Albany, a few factors set the price of your dumpster.
Size comes first. You'll pay more for a larger container, but one that's too small can mean an extra haul.
Debris weight comes next. The City's landfill bills by the ton, and its 2026 tip fee sheet lists construction debris at $200 per ton at the gate and $165 per ton for permitted commercial haulers, with a half-ton minimum. Plaster, brick, and slate add up quickly at those rates. Some items also cost extra no matter what they weigh. The same sheet charges $25 per mattress, $24 per tire, and $62 for each appliance or electronic item found in a load. Pull those out or tell us about them before pickup.

The 15-Yard Dumpster is a good match for a garage or basement cleanout, new flooring, or a small roof.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is the size many Albany homeowners choose for a whole-house cleanout or a remodel that covers several rooms. It also fits in most driveways.

If your dumpster stays on private property, such as a driveway, a yard, or a job site, you usually don't need a City permit in Albany. Once any part of it sits on a road or sidewalk, you'll need one.
The City of Albany calls it a Sidewalk & Barricade Permit. The Department of Buildings & Regulatory Compliance issues it, and the permit application lists a fee of $75, or $50 if it's tied to work that already has a building permit. You'll also need a sketch showing where the container goes. The form sets a $15 per day, per meter charge for metered spaces, paid to the Albany Parking Authority once Traffic Engineering approves it. Call 518-434-5791 at least three business days ahead for metered space.
The form spells out rules for dumpsters in the street. Each one needs reflective traffic devices around it. Containers can stay for no more than 14 days and can't block fire hydrants, loading zones, or accessible parking spaces. They also have to be moved during a declared snow emergency.

Most debris from a remodel or cleanout is fine. The limits come from New York State rules and from the City's landfill.
New York bans certain electronics from the trash. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says that since January 2015, covered electronics can't go to landfills or in regular trash. That includes TVs, computers, monitors, printers, and game consoles.
The Rapp Road landfill has its own list. It won't take yard waste such as grass, leaves, stumps, trunks, or limbs. It also refuses liquids, gas cylinders, barrels and drums, motors and other solid metal pieces, and chemicals or other hazardous waste. Scrap metal, appliances, tires, motor oil, and textiles are treated as recyclables and turned away as well.
As always, keep paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos out of a standard dumpster.

Albany owns its landfill. The City of Albany Rapp Road Waste Management Facility is at 525 Rapp Road, Albany, NY 12205, and its phone number is 518-869-3651. The City's Department of General Services runs the site on about 255 acres west of Rapp Road, next to the Thruway.
According to the facility's website, it's open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the last load goes in at 10:30 a.m. It's closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Every customer needs a permit on file to use it.
Those short hours make hauling debris yourself hard to fit into a workday, and a dumpster takes that problem off your hands. Your account manager will confirm where your load is headed and explain the disposal fees ahead of time.
