Most household junk and building debris can go in your container. New York's disposal rules set the main limits.
New York bans throwing away many kinds of electronics, so TVs, computers, monitors, and similar devices can't go in the trash or in a dumpster. The state also bars waste tires from land burial, so keep tires out as well.
Household hazardous waste stays out too. The state's list includes oil-based paint, pool chemicals, car fluids, hobby chemicals, and compact fluorescent bulbs. Solvents, fuel, liquids, propane tanks, and asbestos aren't allowed in a standard dumpster either.
Much of Long Island's trash is burned to make energy, and those plants screen incoming loads before accepting them. A banned item can get a load turned away or bring extra charges.
