A dumpster holding burnable waste must sit at least 25 feet from the nearest building unless it's protected by an automatic sprinkler system. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says that since January 1, 2015, many electronics can't be thrown away in landfills, waste-to-energy plants, or the trash. New York also bars burying waste tires in landfills, so tires should go to a recycler or the Town facility instead of your dumpster.

That happens at the Dutchess County Resource Recovery Agency's waste-to-energy plant at 96 Sand Dock Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Only licensed haulers and towns may bring trash there, and the Agency's office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 845-463-6020.
Construction and demolition debris usually goes elsewhere. New York's environmental agency lists state-permitted debris processing sites in Dutchess County, including a privately run site at 230 Van Wagner Road in Poughkeepsie that takes mixed construction debris, wood, concrete, and metal.
Residents also have the Pleasant Valley Compactor & Recycling Facility at 24 Sherow Road, open Friday and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Town residents with a permit. It takes appliances, air conditioners, electronics, bulky furniture, scrap metal, and tires. Its phone number is 845-635-1005.
