Most construction debris and household junk is fine. California's rules set most of the limits.
CalRecycle bans many items from the trash statewide. That includes all batteries, fluorescent tubes, paint, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze, propane tanks, and asbestos. Tires and electronics like TVs and computers are banned as well. Treated wood, such as old fence posts, is handled as hazardous waste, and in Sacramento County only the Kiefer Landfill takes it.
Fuel, liquids, and other hazardous waste can't go in a standard dumpster either.
The county asks you to drain fluids and pull removable batteries out of items first. Anything with a built-in battery goes to an electronics recycling program. North Area Recovery Station also has a household hazardous waste drop-off on site.
