Most debris from a remodel, a build, or a cleanout can go in your container. California's hazardous waste rules set the main limits.
CalRecycle keeps a long list of household items out of the regular trash statewide. It includes all batteries, fluorescent and other lamps, pesticides and other garden chemicals, oil-based paint, motor oil and filters, antifreeze, and tires. Propane tanks and other gas cylinders are on it too, along with wood treated with chemical preservatives and anything containing mercury.
Old electronics count as hazardous in California, so TVs, monitors, and laptops go to e-waste recycling instead of a dumpster.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either. Galt residents can take household chemicals to the Special Waste Collection Center in Elk Grove at no charge, under a City contract. The City asks residents to limit visits to once a month and keep each load under 15 gallons or 125 pounds.
