Before you plan a project in South Lake Tahoe, there's one local rule to know.
The City runs trash service through a franchise. A South Lake Tahoe Basin Waste Management Authority staff report explains that the City, El Dorado County, and Douglas County each hold an exclusive franchise agreement with one hauler for collecting and disposing of refuse. That hauler also runs the basin's transfer station. Your account manager will confirm how the franchise applies to your address and project before anything is booked.
Container size still matters. A larger dumpster costs more, but one that's too small can mean paying for a second haul over the pass.
The kind of debris counts too. Items such as mattresses, appliances, TVs, tires, and propane tanks are often charged by the piece, so list them when you call.

The 20-Yard Dumpster is a common pick in South Lake Tahoe for whole-house cleanouts and remodels that touch several rooms.

The 40-Yard Dumpster is our biggest size. It's meant for commercial projects and major demolition on lots with room to spare.

If your dumpster stays on private property, like your driveway or lot, it generally won't need a City permit. If any part of it sits in a street or the City's right-of-way, a permit comes into play.
According to the City's permit applications page, the Engineering Division of Public Works issues Encroachment and Obstruction Permits for work within the City's right-of-way. Since April 14, 2025, applications, inspections, and payments all go through the City's online permit portal, and you'll need to register for an account first.
The City doesn't post a fee or review time for these permits, so ask about both before you choose a delivery date. The permit contact on that page can be reached at 530-542-6070.

Most debris from a remodel or cleanout can go in. California's trash rules and the transfer station's limits set the rest.
CalRecycle's list of items banned from the trash includes all batteries, fluorescent tubes, LED bulbs, and electronics such as TVs, monitors, laptops, and printers. Tires, propane tanks, and other gas cylinders are on the list too.
Wood treated with chemical preservatives, like old deck framing, has to be handled as hazardous waste. So does asbestos, which shows up in some older roofing, flooring, and siding.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, and fuel can't go in a standard dumpster. South Lake Tahoe is also bear country, and the City warns that garbage is a leading cause of trouble with bears. Keep food waste out of an open container.
