Most remodel and cleanout debris can go in your container. California's trash bans and the landfill's rules set the limits.
The state bans a long list of household items from the trash. CalRecycle's list includes fluorescent bulbs and tubes, all batteries, latex and oil-based paint, aerosol cans that aren't empty, pesticides, pool chemicals, antifreeze, motor oil and filters, and propane tanks. Treated wood, like old fence posts, must be handled as hazardous waste. Asbestos can show up in older roofing, flooring, siding, and cement.
Two other items stay out as well. Tires are banned from the trash, and so are electronics such as TVs, monitors, computers, printers, and microwaves.
Hazardous waste, liquids, solvents, and fuel can't go in a standard dumpster either. Palmdale residents can drop off household chemicals and electronics for free at the Antelope Valley Environmental Collection Center, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip.
If something on your list gives you pause, ask your account manager before it goes in.
