Most construction and cleanout debris can go in your container. California's trash bans and the County landfill rules set the limits.
CalRecycle, the state's recycling agency, keeps a list of waste banned from the trash. It includes all batteries, fluorescent lamps, TVs, computers, and monitors. It also includes paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, tires, asbestos, and treated wood.
Hazardous waste, liquids, fuel, and gas cylinders can't go in a standard dumpster either.
Fountain Valley residents can take many of these items to Orange County's free household hazardous waste collection centers. The closest one is in Huntington Beach and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It takes paint, batteries, electronics, motor oil, and pool supplies, but not asbestos or treated wood.
If you're unsure about something, ask your account manager before it goes in the container.
