Most household and building debris is fine. California's waste rules and the county landfill set the limits.
California treats several common items as universal waste. The state Department of Toxic Substances Control says these can't go in household trash or landfills. The list covers batteries, electronics, old tube TVs and monitors, fluorescent lamps, mercury items, aerosol cans that aren't empty, and solar panels.
Prima Deshecha Landfill won't take tires, asbestos, batteries, chemicals, paint, pesticides, fuel, or liquid waste. Hazardous waste, liquids, solvents, and asbestos don't belong in a standard dumpster anywhere.
Big building projects have one more rule. The City requires many new builds, additions, and demolition jobs to recycle or reuse at least 65 percent of their construction debris, as its construction and demolition program explains. Pull a building permit, and the City will ask for a waste plan.
