Most household and building debris can go in a container. California's disposal rules and the receiving transfer station set the limits.
CalRecycle says it's illegal to put hazardous waste in the trash. In California, that covers more than most people expect: all batteries, fluorescent bulbs, paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil, antifreeze, and hazardous aerosol cans.
Several building and household items are on the list too. Asbestos, treated wood, TVs, computers, phones, and mercury thermostats all need a special drop-off, and tires need their own route as well.
Liquids, fuel, and propane tanks can't go in a standard dumpster either. Poway residents can take paint, auto fluids, and other household chemicals to the City's hazardous waste facility on Saturdays.
If you're not sure about an item, ask your account manager before it goes in the container.
