Several parts of a Seaside job shape what you'll pay.
The first is the container itself. Larger sizes cost more, but a container that's too small can lead to a second trip. We'd rather help you pick the right one from the start.
The second is what's inside. Every Seaside load is weighed at ReGen Monterey, the public agency that runs the Monterey Peninsula's landfill in Salinas. Its disposal fees are $85 per ton for mixed trash and construction debris, but only $2 per ton for clean concrete, brick, and rock. That's a big gap, so keeping clean concrete in its own load can cut your bill.
The third is sorting. ReGen Monterey also sets lower rates for clean drywall, clean lumber, and yard trimmings when they aren't mixed with other debris. Mattresses, appliances, electronics, and tires are handled item by item, so tell us about them when you book.
The last is placement. A container on your driveway needs no City permit. A container in the street needs an encroachment permit first, which adds a small fee and some planning.

The 10-Yard Dumpster works for a bathroom remodel, a small garage cleanout, or a patio teardown. It's also the best choice for concrete, brick, or tile, because heavy debris hits the weight limit long before the container looks full.
The 15-Yard Dumpster is a step up for mid-size work. Think new flooring in a few rooms, a small deck removal, or a roof tear-off on a smaller home.
The 20-Yard Dumpster is a favorite for Seaside homeowners. It fits a kitchen remodel, a full move-out cleanout, or a multi-room update without taking over the whole driveway.
The 30-Yard Dumpster fits whole-house remodels, room additions, and new builds. It's a good choice when a project produces a steady stream of mixed debris.
The 40-Yard Dumpster is our biggest container. It's meant for commercial projects, large demolition, and big property cleanouts, and it needs plenty of room for the truck.

A dumpster kept on private property, like your driveway or a fenced job site, doesn't need a City permit in Seaside. The City steps in once the container sits in the street, on a sidewalk, or on other City land.
The City of Seaside's encroachment permit page lists parking a dumpster or storage container in the street as one of the reasons you need an encroachment permit. The permit comes from the Public Works Department at City Hall, 440 Harcourt Avenue. You'll need a completed application, proof of liability insurance that names the City as an additional insured, and any traffic or pedestrian control plan the City asks for.
The City's fee schedule lists a $45 fee for a dumpster or storage bin in the right-of-way, charged for every two weeks it stays there. City rules also say private items can't be left on a public street or sidewalk without written permission, and that permission usually requires a real need. A driveway spot is almost always the easier path.

Most household and building debris is welcome. The limits come from California's statewide trash rules and from what ReGen Monterey will take at the landfill.
California keeps a long list of items out of the trash. CalRecycle names batteries, fluorescent lights, paint, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, and electronics like TVs and computers. Tires are banned from the trash too, and so are asbestos and chemically treated wood.
On top of that, the usual exclusions apply. Keep hazardous waste, liquids, fuel, and propane tanks out of your container.
ReGen Monterey adds a few rules of its own. It doesn't accept solar panels at all. Treated wood needs paperwork before it reaches the landfill. Electronics, household batteries, paint, and motor oil go to the Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling area, which is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Seaside is one of seven member cities served by ReGen Monterey, along with Carmel-by-the-Sea, Del Rey Oaks, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Sand City. Loads from Seaside go to ReGen Monterey at 14201 Del Monte Blvd., Salinas, CA 93908. The scales are open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The site is closed on Sundays and major holidays.
ReGen Monterey's construction and demolition page explains why sorting matters here. California's green building code requires permitted building and demolition projects to recycle or salvage at least 65% of their construction waste. ReGen's weight receipts show which materials were separated, and contractors have to keep those receipts for the life of the project. If your job has a building permit, ask us about a separate container for concrete or clean wood.
