Most debris from a remodel, roofing job, or cleanout can go in. California's disposal bans and the facility that receives your load set the limits.
The state keeps a long list of items out of the trash. CalRecycle names fluorescent tubes, all batteries, latex and oil-based paint, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, antifreeze, motor oil, and aerosol cans that aren't empty. Tires, propane tanks, and chemically treated wood are on the list as well.
Electronics are included. TVs, monitors, laptops, printers, and cell phones can't go in the trash in California. Bellflower's franchise service picks up electronic waste as a free bulky item for homes, which makes it easy to set them aside.
Hazardous waste, liquids, fuel, and asbestos don't belong in a standard dumpster either. Older homes can have asbestos in flooring, roofing, or siding, so test before you tear it out.
