Most remodeling and cleanout debris is fine. The limits come from California's rules on hazardous items and from the county landfill.
California classes batteries, electronics, old tube TVs and monitors, fluorescent lamps, mercury items, aerosol cans that still hold product, and solar panels as universal waste. State rules keep all of them out of the trash and out of landfills.
Hazardous waste, liquids, paint, solvents, fuel, and asbestos can't go in a standard dumpster either.
Yolo County runs a Household Hazardous Waste facility at the landfill, open Thursday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Residents can take household hazardous waste there instead of tossing it. Tires, appliances, and electronics should be kept out of your container and mentioned when you book.
