Most remodel and cleanout debris can go in. California's rules and the county landfill set the limits.
CalRecycle says it's illegal to dispose of hazardous waste in the garbage. The state's banned list includes every kind of battery, fluorescent and LED lamps, paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, and propane tanks. Electronics like TVs, laptops, printers, and phones are on it as well.
Remodelers should also watch for asbestos in older materials and for treated wood, which has to be handled as hazardous waste. Tires are banned from the trash too.
The Prima Deshecha landfill hosts one of the county's free household hazardous waste collection centers, so paint, batteries, and chemicals have an easy place to go. Liquids and fuel can't go in a standard dumpster either.
